Excursion Description
Participants will discover the colorful traditions and stylings of Hawaii’s famous Hula dancers. They will explore the costumes, instruments, gathering practices and preparations that all dancers must go through to prepare for traditional Hula. Demonstrations and presentations on the assembly and uses of various Hawaiian Instruments and adornments will be featured including Hawaiian bark cloth, bamboo stamping, Hawaiian fiber, forest greenery, leis, and natural dyes. In a “hands-on” activity, participants will learn chants associated with dances and the secrets to “night picking” the most precious shells.
Participants can explore the beautiful grounds of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel as they enjoy a delightful local-style lunch. Following, we’ll walk over to historic Coconut Island (across the bridge) to enjoy views of Hilo’s beautiful coastline. Tour guides will share local legends and ancient Hawaiian games. Next on the tour is a trip to Hilo’s famed Farmers Market where the passengers can meet local members of the community and view local produce and unique craft items. After a “fond Aloha”, the passengers will be taken back to Hilo Pier.
