Birding

Hawaiian EDventure offers an array of academic, cultural, recreational and experiential travel programs that blend Hawaii’s culture, science, history and ethnic diversity. EDventure’s custom-designed programs may be created to meet your educational and recereational objectives.

Our “Birding” program may include one, two or a three-island exploration. If you let us know what your educational/recreational needs are; Hawaiian EDventure will design the PERFECT program for your group. Below, see a description of our Collaborative Birding program with Exploritas (formerly Elderhostel).

Description:

Native Hawaiian bird: "Apapane"

Native Hawaiian bird: "Apapane"

The islands of Hawaii are a birder’s paradise. More than 150 species of beautiful birds inhabit the Hawaiian Islands, 40 of which are endemic. Our instructors-(e.g Dan Lindsay)-avid birders– lead daily field lectures to the region’s best birding sites. Highlighted by a presentation with a world-renowned birder and photographer, discussions feature Hawaii’s amazing plants, animals, and geology, and the vanishing endemic bird species. Beginning and experienced birders will sight some of the world’s most unusual and rare birds. Explore Waimea Canyon, Koke’e State Park, Kilauea Point and Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuges, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Explore seaside nature preserves with frigates, tropical birds, and albatross. In mid-elevation rainforests, search for amakahi, elepaio, apapane, and i’iwi. Venture into the high dryland to locate the incredible palila. Hawaii’s avifauna provide a showcase of co-evolution and adaptation.

“This was my first Elder Hostel (Exploritas) program, though I have traveled extensively around many parts of the world, and the trip was terrific! The leader, Dan, is first rate. He knows so much about the history and culture of Hawaii and fills in with information in a very interesting way as we were driving from place to place. No drivel – just useful, relevant information. The birds are amazing! Better food – more local fish – less sandwiches every day – would be my only suggestion. Bottomline: it was a terrific trip!”
